Current Exhibit:  Photo Collages on Recycled Window Frames

From the Artist:

My reasons for making photo collages stem from a child-like need to explore my surroundings, a juvenile need to demolish those surroundings and a growing need to give life to lifeless things and add drama to living things.

The subjects I choose to photograph often have dichotomous elements in common.  They are brimming with life and death, good and evil, are useful and useless, and often serve as symbols of growth among the harshest conditions.

Similarly, I have a growing interest in comparing a subject's past with the possibilities of its future.  This comparison often produces flower-like images in my works.  The flowers often symbolize the vigor of life by growing and stretching to the edges of the collage.  Conversely, flowers frequently appear in my work as wilted and heavy, perched atop weakly-looking stems, thus representing the impending decay that awaits all living things.  Beyond content, my collages are defined by the negative space that envelops them.  The space can be comforting, stifling, or give the piece a sense of expansiveness.

In the end, my goal as an artist is to actively participate in the events of my surroundings and to produce artwork that conveys that participation.
